Non–overlapping Germ–grain Models: Characteristics and Material Modelling

چکیده

We consider three different non–overlapping germ–grain models, two of which are constructed in a similar fashion. These two models are generalisations of Matérn’s hard–core models. In both cases we start with a homogeneous Poisson process and use the points as centres of convex sets, grains, of the same shape. The process is thinned so that no grains overlap. Two different thinning schemes result in the two models. The pair–correlation functions and the mark–correlation functions for both models are derived. The models are fitted to images of inclusions in cast iron. For one of the models above, if the thinning is performed independently of the grain sizes we show that the volume fraction is at most 1/2d for dimension d = 1 or 2. If the thinning is performed dependently of the grain sizes, it is possible to achieve volume fraction arbitrarily close to one for any dimension. The third non–overlapping germ–grain model is a Voronoi tessellation. It is used as a model for the grain structure of the surface of a metal. As an example of this approach, we study the influence of grain structure on fatigue life. A crack growth model is applied to simulated grain structures. The conclusion is that the fatigue life increases, compared to a model with grains of equal size.

RAPPORT Central limit theorem for a class of random measures associated with germ - grain models

The paper introduces a family of stationary random measures in R d generated by so-called germ-grain models. The germ-grain model is deened as the union of i.i.d. compact random sets (grains) shifted by points (germs) of a point process. This model gives rise to random measures deened by the sum of contributions of non-overlapping parts of the individual grains. The corresponding moment measure...

To Express Required CT-Scan Resolution for Porosity and Saturation Calculations in Terms of Average Grain Sizes

Despite advancements in specifying 3D internal microstructure of reservoir rocks, identifying some sensitive phenomenons are still problematic particularly due to image resolution limitation. Discretization study on such CT-scan data always has encountered with such conflicts that the original data do not fully describe the real porous media. As an alternative attractive approach, one can recon...

Modelling the Micro-physics Underlying Earthquake Nucleation Processes and Rupture

Objectives Modelling microscopic properties of rock allows simulation of non-linear and complex macroscopic behaviour. Rather than specifying a "true" representation of rock at a microscopic scale, models use empirical properties at a mesoscopic scale such that the correct macroscopic behaviour is simulated. The objectives of the session \Modelling the micro-physics underlying earthquake nuclea...

A Point Process Approach for Spatial Stochastic Modeling of Thunderstorm Cells

In this paper we consider two different approaches for spatial stochastic modeling of thunderstorms. Thunderstorm cells are represented using germ-grain models from stochastic geometry, which are based on Cox or doubly-stochastic cluster processes. We present methods for the operational fitting of model parameters based on available point probabilities and thunderstorm records of past periods. ...

Distinct element modelling of the mechanical behaviour of intact rocks using voronoi tessellation model

This paper aims to study the mechanical behaviour and failure mechanism of intact rocks under different loading conditions using the grain based model implemented in the universal distinct element code (UDEC). The grain based numerical model is a powerful tool to investigate complicated micro-structural mechanical behaviour of rocks. In the UDEC grain based model, the intact material is simulat...
